New Minecraft Addiction

Minecraft

I like the idea of a sandbox/open world game, but I didn't think it would hold my attention. In retrospect, I was a complete dumbass who didn't know myself at all.

I subscribe to a lot of channels on YouTube. One of those channels is Retsupurae, which is basically MST3K for Let's Plays (video games and video game players). Recently they created a podcast, Retsutalk, which I added to the list of podcasts I listen to during my work commute.

The most recent episode (episode 4) featured DaveO, who has commentated with Slowbeef and Diabetus for Retsupurae on occassion. DaveO mentioned that he has been playing Minecraft, so I watched his Let's Plays yesterday. Thankfully, unlike other LPer's, he edits past the parts that are dull to watch.

I realized that I hadn't actually seen gameplay before then. I've only ever seen people building pixel art out of blocks. It seemed like a waste of time before, but Dave_O's videos made it seems fun. It's cheap enough ($25) and runs in Linux, so I bought it last night when I got home from work.

The next thing I noticed is that I had to go to work in a few hours.

I have to fly to Chicago tonight. I had planned to either read or continue creating a video game I have been working on, but as I started to write this article, Minecraft updated to version 1.3.1 just 33 minutes ago. One of the new features is:

Single-player now runs a server internally

Well, I guess reading and coding will have to wait.
